The Milwalkee Building Company was established in 1905 and, under the later name of Meyer & Holler, went on to become an important architectural firm in the area. Meyer & Holler created numerous landmark buildings in Southern California, including Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. Although the firm designed in various styles, this house is an outstanding example of the best in Craftsman architecture. The Gladding, McBean terra cotta was considered the ceramics company's finest achievement during the Art Deco era. Artist Haig Patigian sculpted four figures (representing Aviation, Postal Service, Industry and Navigation) for the entrance and the forty nine-foot terra cotta winged figures that stood watch atop the roof that represented "motive power". Despite pleas to preserve the building, demolition began in 1968 to make way for the ARCO Towers. Bras hang from many of the fixtures, as it is a decades-old tradition that women leave their bras, signed, somewhere in the bar on their first visit, a tradition that even a city inspector could not shut down for fire safety reasons. Part of the bar’s ability to endure was pure lucky timing.
Designed by the firm William Pereira and Charles Luckman in the Miesian-style on Crown Hill, the building was the tallest building in Los Angeles when it was opened in April 1958. In 1996, the company moved to El Segundo and the space they vacated is now the Los Angeles Center Studios. That building, like much of the immediate neighborhood now caters to the predominantly Latino residents, although the charms of the Holler House still elude that demographic, much as it did that German lady in the ‘70s. Any visitor to Milwaukee should experience local beer and bowling, and Holler House is a very unique way to do it. They are the oldest sanctioned lanes in the country, making Holler House the first bowling alley in the United States, a fact that has been confirmed by the United States Bowling Congress. Another woman from Illinois pitched in a video tribute to the Holler House that she allowed the bar to use on the website.
The oil industry was a source of major commissions for Beelman. Beelman and his partner Alexander Curlett designed the Union Oil Company's second building at 7th and Hope in 1923, which has now been turned into commercial office space. The Standard Oil Company of California left its Myron Hunt building in 1928 for a much larger space on the southern edge of downtown at Olympic and Hope. The building was designated a Los Angeles landmark in 1988 and is still used as commercial space. Their heyday was cut short by World War II, after which higher density apartment buildings became the preferred model.

Steven Holl (born December 9, 1947, Bremerton, Washington, U.S.) American architect and artist whose built work draws on contemporary theories of phenomenology. Instead of imposing a style on a site, he argued, the site itself should generate the “architectural idea” applied to it. As an outgrowth of the Arts and Crafts Movement begun in England, Craftsman-style architecture emphasized handcrafted workmanship, natural materials, and an intimate relationship with nature. Craftsman designers rejected the machine-made artifice of the Victorian era and sought to create dwellings that married beauty and function. In the 1960s, the Union Oil Company reorganized as Unocal and moved into the Unocal Building just west of the 110 Freeway.
The hotel is perfectly situated in the middle of Phillipsburg on Front Street, and the beach is immediately in the back of the hotel. The staff was professional, friendly, and responsive. During our stay, we asked for additional blankets, which were brought up to our room while we were on the beach. We also arranged to rent a car for the day, and the hotel staff made all of the arrangements; the car was delivered to the hotel and then picked up from the hotel once we were done. The bowling lanes are still the original wood, not a synthetic wood surface, and the pins are hand set by a real person. The two lanes feature the original wood, and are oiled with a spray can. Neighborhood kids reset the pins by hand (the standard tip for them is $3, or the bowler will hear about it from the bar’s elderly owner) and the bowling shoes are in a jumble under the stairs. There’s no room for seating, scores are kept by hand, and when the bar was cleaned for the first time in 40 years in 2008, in the lead up to its centennial, two 15-pound wooden bowling balls were uncovered. In 1911 Thomas Szewczykowski dropped off a campaign poster at this bar during his successful run for 24th ward alderman. He’s long gone, but the sign is still on the wall of the Holler House, 2042 W. Jack White, of the White Stripes, is an avid bowler, and came by when he was in town for a concert; the bar is usually closed on Mondays, but was opened specially for him.
